WhatsApp launched a unique and exciting new feature for users: the ability to add music clips to their Status updates. Launched on 28 March 2025, this feature enables you to add a soundtrack to your photos and videos to make your status updates more personal and interactive. What’s New with WhatsApp Status?

WhatsApp Status, similar to Instagram Stories, allows you to share photos, videos and text that disappear after 24 hours. In the newest version of WhatsApp, now you can also add music clips to your Status updates, which provides a new way to express yourself. This music feature lets you upload 15-second music clips for photos and 60-second clips for videos. Everyone can find a song to match every mood whether it be catchy music, a popular song or a personal favourite.

How Does It Work?

It's easy to add music to your WhatsApp Status. Here’s how:

Open WhatsApp, and go to the ‘Updates’ tab.
Tap on the camera icon that says “Add Status” to start adding your new update.
Choose a photo from your library or take a new one.
Tap the new music icon at the top of the screen to see the music library.
Scroll through the library to find a song you like.
Select the section of the track you want to feature in your Status.
You can select up to 15 seconds for a photo Status or 60 seconds for a video Status.
Move the music sticker around if you want to customise the look of your update.
Post your Status with the song!

What’s Different About WhatsApp’s Music Feature?

Even though this function parallels Instagram's music functionality for Stories, the difference is that music shared on WhatsApp Status is end-to-end encrypted, so only your friends can see the songs you share. This creates some privacy, as WhatsApp cannot see the songs you share, so you have a more secure way to share your favourite songs with your trusted friends.

The Music Library and Restrictions

The music library within WhatsApp includes licensed music, similar to the music option on Instagram. This means that there will be a large variety of songs to choose from, but some songs may not be available to certain regions. Currently, WhatsApp does not allow users to upload their music, so you are limited to the selection in the library.

WhatsApp has begun the global rollout of the music feature and it should become available in most regions around the world in the next few weeks. If you do not have it yet, just wait for the rollout to finish.
